The boy killed the little Kelci Devine Lewis after her mother
Katerra Lewis went to a nightclub, leaving the baby under
the supervision of the boy. According to local media reports,
there were six other children between the ages of two and
eight but no adults at home.
When left alone the 8-year-old allegedly attacked the
girl because the baby wouldn’t stop crying. Kelci suffered
head trauma and internal injuries, which led to her death.
The girl’s mother found her lifeless body in a crib only the
following morning.
Birmingham police spokesman Sean Edwards
said: “This is by far one of the saddest cases that
I have witnessed and been a part of since I
became a police officer. I think her punishment is
going to be something she’ll have to live with the
rest of her life, her actions that night, choosing
the club over taking care of her 1-year-old.”
The boy has not been identified and will be tried in juvenile
court. Katerra Lewis has also been charged with
manslaughter but released on a $15,000 bond. A
memorial for Kelci was held late last month at a Birmingham
park, where friends and family lit candles and released
balloons in the girl’s memory.
